Castle Hotels Provence – A History

Castle Hotels ProvenceThe area of Provence, France is full of historical wonder. Steeped with various archeological places of interest, there is no shortage of fascinating sites to look at. Even our own Chateau de Varenne has an interesting history. A Chateau is a place of residence for a lord of somebody of high nobility or gentry mostly found in French-speaking regions.

How our Chateau became one of the best Castle Hotels Provence

The Chateau was built in 1610. It was was then bought in the 19th century by Guillaume Puy, who was described  as  “the Perfect Mayor” of Avignon by Napoleon. His son in law, the Marquis of Cambis took over the residence.  The Chateau was later sold to the Prefect of Gard before the first world war and since then it has become one of the best castle hotels Provence.

Until the mid-nineteenth century, the Chateau was intimately linked to the Puy family. Loup Puy the earliest known owner, was a well known apothecary in Avignon. In 1676, he erected an altar dedicated to St. Pancras in Sauveterre church.
