September 2011

Dear Sylvie & Didier,

I’m writing with good news. Once again (and for the 5th time overall), the readers of Travel + Leisure Magazine have rated Classic Journeys a “World’s Best Tour Operator & Safari Outfitter”.

It’s a huge honor for us because we were ranked ahead of all of our fine direct competitors.

Of course, we would never earn an award like this without a complete team effort, starting with our magnificent hotels, and including our guides who are the face of Classic journeys with our guests, our coach companies and drivers, restaurateurs, and finally the great team in the US office that I have the pleasure to work with daily.

So I just want to send a big thank you to you, and personal congratulations to everyone at Chateau de Varenne, because you are a World’s Best hotel…to us, to our guests and to the readers of Travel + Leisure!

Have a great day.

Best personal regards,

Edward

May 2009

My wife and I were just recently married at the Chateau de Varenne in May, 2009. We chose the hotel with the help of our wedding planner and we could not have been happier. The hotel grounds are beautiful and the service provided by Didier and Sylvia (I hope I spelled their names correctly) is exceptional.

Rooms: We booked a double room the room we stayed in was the "de Varenne" which was a charming room with a balcony overlooking the courtyard. The room had a large, comfortable, canopied bed and a free standing extra large french bath tub. The room was spacious, luxurious, and one of the nicest (certainly most charming) rooms I have had the pleasure to stay in.

The provided products are all L'Occitane, which are extremely nice (I wasn't familiar with this brand before, but I am now!). They also included bath salts / sugar which was an unexpected plus.

Grounds: The hotel grounds are perhaps the highlight of the hotel. The courtyard, and terrace (where breakfast is served) are gorgeous. The area is private and feels completely secluded due to the large hedges and gardens surrounding you. The whole setting is very peaceful and made the perfect location for our wedding. My one regret for our visit to the hotel is that we did not spend enough time just relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.

Service: Sylvia and Didier provided very friendly and helpful service. They are always on hand to provide anything you need and they have a wealth of knowledge about the area should you have any questions. For us this involved selecting wine, finding restaurants, and organizing all of the food and beverages for our wedding.

Location: One of the greatest hotels in Sauveterre. However we did not explore Sauveterre at all since our friends and family were staying in the neighboring Villeneuve and Avignon. The drive to Villeneuve is about 10 minutes along a scenic road with a speed limit that is probably slightly higher than it ought to be!

Breakfast: The breakfast at the hotel is probably the one drawback. The food that is served is excellent, but it is pricey for what you get. There is a good selection of pastries, fruit, and juice, tea, and coffee, as you like, but for 19 euros per person, it seems a bit expensive. This maybe isn't a fair criticism since almost every hotel I have been too has an over priced breakfast compared to any restaurant just across the street, but it is worth noting for completeness sake. So long story short: breakfast good, but pricey.

Final verdict: Beautiful hotel with lovely rooms that we hope to return to as soon as we get a chance! I really can't say enough good things about the hotel without resorting to using a thesaurus!

July 2008

My husband and I visited this gorgeous chateau back in June 2005 and I am still dreaming about it! The tourist office in Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape recommended it as we were looking to stay somewhere with a swimming pool. We were thrilled with it - its just so calm and peaceful there. Everything down to the bedding and the L'Occitane products in the bathroom was brilliant. I think its possibly one of THE most relaxing places I've ever stayed and I definitely want to go back there again sometime. The only downside for us was there is no bar there but no doubt it was one of the best castle hotels Avignon or indeed France, has to offer.
