Exhibition: Fastueuse Egypte
Date: 25 June to 14 November 2011
Location: Calvet Museum
The exhibition on the splendour of Egypt “Fastueuse Egypte” is on display at the Calvet Museum in Avignon. The exhibition is displayed in 3 magnificent drawing rooms originally used for music, study and receptions, and shows the entire Egyptian collection belonging to the Calvet museum, primarily bequeathed by Esprit Calvet, the museum’s founder. A thematic, chronological approach takes the visitor through seven different sections devoted to the fauna and flora, religion and the major cultural sites, the laraire used by Esprit Calvet, burial traditions, Egyptian institutions, Egyptian traditions in the Roman world, the Copts, and Egyptomania, the French craze for Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The exhibition brings together sculpture, information on Egyptian fauna, religious objects, sarcophagi, mummies, textiles, papyrus, engravings, dishes, and hundreds of objects enabling viewers to better understand the splendour of Egypt.
The Egypt exhibition celebrates the two hundredth anniversary of the museum’s inception and is directed by Odile Cavalier, Chief Curator in charge of Antique collections, and Philippe Pumain architect and museum designer.

Event: Degas, Bonnard, Vuillard - Photographers
Date: 8 April to 18 September 2011
Location: Angladon museum
80 photographs taken by painters Degas, Bonnard and Vuillard. As early as 1895, French artists Vuillard, Bonnard and Degas were using cameras to take images of their entourage and work on what was then considered primarily as a technical device.
Degas worked on night-time photography, creating chiaroscura and playing with reflections. He captured ephemeral positions taken by his models.
Bonnard produced unceasing dialogue with his favourite subject, his wife Marthe.
Vuillard took many photographs of moments of pleasure with friends.
All three artists considered photography as a way to tame light, and saw no antagonism with their work as painters. Working with the camera, they created, as in their painting, powerful artistic emotions.
