Building
Built in 1610, the Chateau was then bought in the 19th century by Guillaume Puy, “the Perfect Mayor” of Avignon according to Napoleon and then occupied by his son in law, the Marquis of Cambis. The Chateau was later sold to the Prefect of Gard before the first world war. Since then it has become one of the luxury hotels Provence.
The Puy Family
Until the mid-nineteenth century, its history is intimately linked to the Puy family. Loup Puy, the earliest known owner was an apothecary in Avignon. He is known to have erected in the church of Sauveterre, around 1676, an altar dedicated to St. Pancras.
The property then passed from father to son until Antoinette, the daughter of Guillaume Puy, Mayor of Avignon, married in August of 1809 to Marquis Cambis Orsan.
De Varenne

After the death of Antoinette in 1833, ownership of the castle was passed to her son Henry Francis Cambis. After the death of two sons, in 1847 and 1848, the father in turn inherited. The last branch of Orsan, the Marquis inherited the castle in 1860.
Subsequently, Paul Maitrot de Varenne, prefect of the Gard, purchased the property name. Long after his death in 1933, his wife and daughter sold the castle.
